Consumer health technology needs more than consumer design

A useful at-home platform has to make a complex process approachable. It also has to respect the scientific and engineering constraints behind the result.

YouCount has developed BodyCheck within a wider network of research, engineering, and health relationships that includes the National Research Council Canada, the University of British Columbia, and Providence Health Care’s New St. Paul’s Hospital.

These connections place the work in conversation with people who think deeply about instrumentation, health systems, research methods, and how technology performs outside a controlled demonstration.

From prototype questions to product questions

Early engineering asks whether a system can work. Product development asks a harder set of questions:

• Can the reading conditions be controlled?
• Can the process be repeated at home?
• Can results be organized in a way that supports informed wellness decisions?
• Can the limitations be stated clearly?

BodyCheck’s answer combines a reusable controlled-light reader with test strips, machine vision, sensors, and analytics. The current configuration reads 12 urine biomarkers across Exercise & Recovery, Hydration, and Meals & Nutrition.

A clear role for the product

BodyCheck is designed for wellness and performance tracking. It is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any condition. It is not a substitute for advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Within that role, the platform is engineered for precision and tested to CLSI standards. The aim is to help users build a repeatable biomarker routine while YouCount continues to develop the technology with the discipline expected of Canada’s broader health and engineering community.
